I always wanted to run but it's painful and boring (unless done on a hiking trail or through a foresty area that can keep me entertained). I've never had a problem running when involved in a sport though. Running is also out of the equation for me atm, it's just too hard on my hip and leg muscles from the surgery.
Now biking on the otherhand is something I am very interested in. Originally I thought that it would be worse because of the motion, hard work on the leg muscles and joint- but I found that is not the case. Which is AWESOME.
Biking doesn't require much as far as gear to get started, find a GOOD bike, including seat as this is rather important. If you get really into it, you can even get biking shoes which allow for better movement- you push down to pedal and you pull up, as these shoes clip onto the pedals! Also nice for not having your foot slip off etc etc...
The helmet thing, depending on your style of biking and where you bike is going to make this important to have. It's always a risk, I myself am not a big fan of helmets. I figure that if I get hit by a car, I'm going to be in some serious trouble no matter what really... BUT even thinking that... it's good to have one on hand.
